MSA is a group that is active in the field of computational design and fabrication. The group cooperates with universities, but it works independently. We attempt to use the mathematical solutions in architecture and also architectural geometry, as a root in the past and future perspective. the MSA research focus is on the theme of innovation in digital fabrication methods and kinetic facades. It can be reached by using fabrication machines, Electronic controllers, and platforms. Besides, it has a critical approach toward materials.

On the other side, the attention is on the back and forth process in the design. There are some problems because of budget constraints, the speed and performance, and sometimes prefabrication in constructions. This problem would be solved to some extends by knowing the hidden capabilities of available facilities, flexibility in the design process, and entering to the other industries. This activity will be led to innovative productions, which are used in common and more economic projects.
The group accomplished its first workshop with the subject of ‘the digital design and fabrication’ in the summer of 2016 Which had been called “Iron shell pavilion”. till now the group had many workshops in this field and also, about the topics such as transformable geometry and origami. After making a prototype, some of them have led to human-scale projects.

MEHRDAD AZIZKHANI | 2014

Founder | Computational Designer

Mehrdad is an architect, maker, and computational designer and holds a master’s degree in architecture. He founded MSA (Mathematical Solutions for Architecture) in 2014 with a desire to meld his passion for creative design with his architecture and fabricating know-how. He is interested in how things are made and enjoys making things himself. Mehrdad has conducted many workshops on computational design and digital fabrication and taught his related knowledge at the Barikeh platform, University of Mazandaran, University of Babolsar, University of Qazvin, University of Tafresh. He enjoys programming, rock music, playing overly professional computer games, and playing complicated board games with friends.

ALI NAKHAEI | 2015

Co-Founder | Computational Designer

Ali has a bachelor’s degree in Architecture and is currently finishing up a master’s degree on previous orientation. From the master’s period, he found an interest in computational design. He likes the challenge of finding the fabrication possibilities and working on the material’s capabilities. He is also attention to recycling material in architecture.
